Assam: Farmers in Bajali face agricultural ruin amidst crumbling irrigation system, rising temperatures

Several agricultural fields in Bajali are developing cracks, with lands parched and devastated. The long-standing issue of dysfunctional irrigation systems has compounded the crisis, with farmers in regions like Halongbari, Kathalmurighat, Digjira, and beyond struggling to save their crops.

Despite the existence of irrigation infrastructure, farmers report receiving no water to sustain their paddy fields, their primary source of livelihood.

The situation has taken a dire turn, with vast expanses of farmland reduced to ruin due to the prolonged water shortage.

Paddy crops, the economic backbone for many families, have been wasted this season, leaving farmers with no means to recover their losses. The failed irrigation system at Kathalmurighat, a supposed lifeline for the region, has turned into a symbol of neglect, with locals claiming they have never received a drop of water from the canal.

Allegations of government negligence have further stoked frustration, as residents point out that officials in the irrigation department continue to draw government salaries despite the complete breakdown of the system.
