Assam flood: Situation improving as water level gradually receding, says Himanta Biswa Sarma

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on July 3 provided a detailed update on the flood situation in the state, expressing cautious optimism as water levels begin to recede. The floods, triggered by a recent cloudburst, have caused widespread disruption and damage across several districts.

CM Sarma reported that the floodwaters are gradually receding, bringing a glimmer of hope to the affected communities. The administration is closely monitoring the situation, and efforts are being ramped up to manage the aftermath of the deluge.

The Chief Minister attributed the current floods to a sudden cloudburst, which led to an overwhelming influx of water, exacerbating the flood conditions. The cloudburst has compounded the challenges faced by the state, necessitating a swift and coordinated response to mitigate the impact on the population and infrastructure.

Highlighting the government's proactive measures, CM Sarma stated, "We are working 24/7 to ensure no further embankment breaches occur." The continuous monitoring and reinforcement of embankments are critical to preventing additional flooding and safeguarding vulnerable areas. Teams are deployed round-the-clock to inspect and repair any weak points in the embankment system.

Looking ahead, CM Sarma expressed optimism that the situation would improve significantly within a week. "In a week, the situation should improve," he stated, underscoring the relentless efforts of the state government and various agencies involved in flood management and relief operations. The focus remains on providing immediate relief to those affected and implementing long-term measures to prevent future occurrences.

The Assam government is also prioritizing relief and rehabilitation for the affected communities. Relief camps have been set up, and essential supplies such as food, water, and medical aid are being distributed. Special attention is being given to the most vulnerable populations, including children, the elderly, and those with special needs.
