Assam: Furious fans turn football tournament into battleground, vandalize stadium in Jamugurihat

A night meant for a thrilling football action descended into mayhem at the Toupia Mini Stadium, as enraged spectators unleashed a wave of vandalism during a much-anticipated night football tournament.

Scheduled to kick off at 6 PM, the match faced unexpected delays and had still not begun by 8:30 PM, igniting the anger of frustrated fans who stormed the stadium, smashing everything in sight. The violent rampage resulted in damages amounting to several lakhs, with chairs, equipment, and other stadium properties left in ruins.

As the tension mounted, the organizing committee members found themselves overwhelmed by the crowd's fury, fleeing the scene to escape the wrath of the disorderly youths.

The football clash, set to feature Nagaon's Amlan Jyoti Football Team against the Assam Police Commando Battalion, never saw the light of day.

The delay, reportedly due to the Amlan Jyoti team’s late arrival, proved to be the final straw, pushing the crowd to a boiling point and transforming the sports arena into a chaotic battleground.

The prize-money tournament, organized by the Toupia Pashgaon Sports Association, had attracted players from across India and even abroad, but the night took a chaotic turn before a single kick could be made.

The police, who rushed to the scene, had to struggle to control the situation and eventually managed to restore order, but the damage was already done, leaving a trail of destruction.
