Assam: Grand celebration underway in Barekuri on the occasion of "World Gibbon Day 2024"

In a spirited observance of "World Holou Day 2024," the village of Dighalsaku in Barekuri came alive with a grand awareness rally, bringing together a diverse gathering of cultural enthusiasts, environmental advocates, and community members. The two-day event, held at the Dighalsaku village playground, aimed to foster environmental awareness and promote cultural unity while celebrating the significance of the Hoolock Gibbon, a cherished symbol in the region.

The rally saw participation from prominent figures, including Bolin Chetia, the MLA of Sadiya constituency and president of the celebration committee. Accompanying him were popular actress Asha Bordoloi, cultural icon Bipul Rabha, and a large number of local residents who joined in the procession. Devotees added to the vibrancy by performing traditional songs and dances, while various cultural troupes representing the region's diverse communities highlighted the rich cultural heritage of Assam. The event witnessed an impressive turnout, with thousands of Barekuri residents joining the festivities.

Organized under the joint initiative of the Barekuri Environment Development Committee and the Barekuri Holou Park, Dighalsaku Branch Management Committee, the celebration was conducted with the support of the Assam Government. It was carried out under the supervision of the Forest Department and Tinsukia District Administration, alongside the active collaboration of several local organizations, including the Assam Moran Sabha (Dighalsaku Branch), Navjyoti Youth Association (Dighalsaku), Surujjyoti Youth Association (N-Motapung), Dighalsaku Women's Association, and the local community.

Following the rally, an open meeting was held, where key issues concerning the environment were discussed. The event attracted a wide array of participants, including ministers, MLAs, renowned environmentalists, government officials, and representatives of various social organizations. The gathering provided a platform for addressing environmental challenges while highlighting the cultural significance of the Hoolock Gibbon, thus underscoring the commitment of the Barekuri community to preserving both nature and heritage.
