Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will be shortly dedicating the most advanced cancer hospital in the Northeast - the State Cancer Institute in Guwahati today.
Apart from the state cancer institute, the chief minister will also be launching welfare works worth rs 640 crore for Kamrup Metro.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Friday that Assam's cancer care model is being replicated by other states in India. This statement was made at the inauguration of a cancer care unit at Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH), a joint venture between the state government and Tata Trusts.
This unit is one of 17 hospitals within the state's cancer care network. Sarma further stated that efforts are underway to enhance this project and establish Assam as the national hub for cancer care. Three types of cancer care units are being set up across the state, with SMCH's unit falling under category 2, providing comprehensive care to patients. The state's only category 1 facility, the apex cancer care hospital, is due to open in Guwahati.
The project, overseen by the Assam Cancer Care Foundation, will be funded by the state government (Rs 2,460 crore), Tata Trusts (Rs 1,180 crore), the Central government (Rs 180 crore), and additional contributions (over Rs 80 crore). Sarma assured that any financial deficits will be covered by the state government. He also mentioned that 10 cancer care centres are already operational, having treated over 2.15 lakh patients.
