Assam: Illegal use of domestic gas cylinders in Karimganj road works sparks controversy

In Assam's Karimganj city, the use of domestic gas cylinders in road construction projects has come under scrutiny. The road construction department has been found utilizing domestic cylinders for tasks that require commercial-grade equipment, a violation of safety and regulatory standards.

This controversy came to light during the construction of a road from AOC Point to Baba Hotel, a project undertaken by Binny Construction. As the road work neared completion, workers began marking the roadside with white paint. Observations revealed that the machines used for this task were fueled by domestic gas cylinders instead of the mandated commercial ones. Upon noticing a journalist's camera, workers attempted to obscure the cylinders with cloths, highlighting the awareness of their wrongdoing.

The use of domestic cylinders in commercial applications is not only illegal but also poses significant safety risks. The contractor responsible, despite being financially and politically influential, opted for three domestic cylinders to power their equipment, bypassing the legal requirement for commercial gas cylinders.

Moreover, additional domestic cylinders were spotted in another machine on top of a truck, clearly marked as belonging to the full department. This raises questions about accountability and enforcement of laws, which seem to be neglected when powerful contractors are involved.

This discovery has led to fines being imposed on several shopkeepers supplying these cylinders. However, the deeper issue remains: ensuring that all contractors, regardless of their influence, adhere to safety regulations and legal standards.
