Assam: Intense heat triggers devastating fire in Tinsukia; gas cylinders explode

A severe heatwave gripping the region has sparked a fire incident in the Lekhapani area of Tinsukia district, where temperatures soared to 40-41 degrees Celsius. The blaze resulted in the complete destruction of a residential house and the office of a nearby tea factory, located approximately three miles from the fire's origin.

Emergency services responded promptly, but the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Eyewitnesses reported that two gas cylinders exploded during the incident, complicating efforts to control the flames. No casualties have been reported so far.

Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted hot and humid weather conditions for Assam over the next 48 hours. According to the IMD bulletin, Guwahati recorded a temperature of 38.2 degrees Celsius on September 21. The maximum temperature is likely to rise above 35 degrees Celsius, approximately 4-5 degrees higher than usual in some districts.

Sanjay Shaw, Director of Meteorology in Guwahati, explained that the rising temperatures can be attributed to prevailing clear to partly cloudy skies during the daytime and high solar insolation. West Assam is likely to see maximum temperatures between 36.0-38.0°C, while Central Assam will face 35.0-37.0°C. Northeast Assam is expected to experience 36.0-38.0°C, and South Assam may report 34.0-36.0°C.

The IMD has also released a list of precautions to combat extreme heat conditions, advising residents to wear lightweight, light-colored clothing, cover their heads while outdoors, and stay hydrated to avoid dehydration. Additionally, farmers and workers are urged to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during peak hours.
