Assam jailor awarded President's Correctional Service Medal for contributions to Kokrajhar Jail

Rabiram Ingti, jail superintendent of Assam's Kokrajhar District Jail, has been awarded the prestigious President's Correctional Service Medal. This honour recognises his significant contributions to improving prison administration, discipline, and the mental health rehabilitation of inmates.

Ingti has implemented various rehabilitation programmes, made prisoners make things such as bars, ropes, chairs, benches, and mats to aid in the physical and mental recovery of inmates.

These efforts have provided inmates with the skills needed for self-improvement and better reintegration into society.

Under Ingti's leadership, the Kokrajhar District Jail has transformed into a place focused on the welfare and rehabilitation of inmates. His dedication to enhancing the mental attitude and behaviour of prisoners has enabled several of them to lead normal lives and contribute to the society.

This recognition marks a historic first for Assam, as Rabiram Ingti is the first person from the state to receive the service medal.

After receiving the award, Ingti expressed his happiness and pride in receiving this prestigious award, highlighting the significance of his work and its impact on prison administration.

Ingti's initiatives have included proper training programmes, starting with yoga and extending to various practical skills, aimed at the holistic development of inmates. Additionally, medical facilities and a legal service fund have also been provided to ensure the health and hygiene of both inmates and prison staff.

Currently, Kokrajhar District Jail houses 305 prisoners, including 298 men, seven women, one Indian teenager, and two foreign nationals. Among them, 31 male and 111 female prisoners are held under the ULA (P) Act, while eight male prisoners are serving simple imprisonment.

The jail also houses 91 male and three female prisoners under rigorous imprisonment.

Since 2001, Ingti has been involved in organising and improving prison facilities, starting as the Deputy Chief Jailor of Barpeta District Jail. His service has also extended to Dibrugarh District Jail, Haflong District Jail, and Tinsukia District Jail, enhancing the overall quality of correctional services in Assam.
