Assam: Karimganj education officer faces serious allegations of document destruction over bribery dispute

Accusations have been raised against Ramkrishnanagar, Karimganj Block Elementary Education Officer of destroying vital documents that were deliberately set ablaze after a demand for a bribe went unmet.

The controversy stems from a High Court order mandating the provincialization of VLP, a private primary school established in 2010 in Ramkrishnanagar.

In compliance, all pertinent school documents were kept at the BEEO office. Headmistress Abida Begum reportedly approached BEEO Manish Das, requesting that the documents be forwarded to Guwahati. Allegedly, Das demanded a bribe of Rs 60,000 for the task.

When Begum declined to pay, it is claimed that Das destroyed the documents by burning them. Following this, Abida Begum lodged a formal complaint with the Additional Deputy Commissioner responsible for the education department.

As a consequence, the Education Secretary, S.N. Choudhury, has summoned Manish Das to appear on November 19. The department's response and subsequent actions will hinge on the findings from this inquiry, which could reveal critical insights into the incident.
