Assam: Kokrajhar court sentences juvenile rapist to 15 years in landmark verdict

Special Judge Jaydev Koch of the Kokrajhar Court has sentenced Injamamul Haque, 30, to 15 years of rigorous imprisonment for the abduction and rape of a minor girl. This ruling follows a distressing incident that took place on January 17, 2022.

According to Manjit Ghosh, the public prosecutor for the Kokrajhar Court, Haque lured the victim, a minor girl, from her home under the pretense of taking her to tuition. Instead, he abducted her to Delhi, where he held her captive for four days and subjected her to sexual assault. The girl was eventually rescued by the police, who subsequently filed a charge sheet against Haque.

The court convicted Haque under Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, resulting in a 15-year prison term. Additionally, the court imposed an extra three months of imprisonment without a fine. Under Section 368 of the Indian Penal Code, Haque was also fined Rs 5,000 and sentenced to five years of rigorous imprisonment, with an additional one month of imprisonment without a fine.
