Kokrajhar Sessions Court has sentenced a man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The judgment was delivered by Additional Sessions Judge-cum-Special Judge (POCSO), in connection with a 2014 sexual assault case.
The case, registered as Case No. 206/2014 at Kokrajhar Sadar police station, involved the sexual abuse of a minor girl by the convict identified as Debojit Barman. The complaint was lodged by the victim’s parents, leading to Barman's arrest under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code.
In addition to the prison sentence, the court imposed a fine of Rs 30,000 on the convict. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional one-year imprisonment.
Speaking to the media, Special Public Prosecutor Manjit Kr. Ghose stated, “The court has delivered justice by awarding the convict a 20-year sentence for the heinous crime against a minor. The case, registered on May 14, 2014, has now reached its rightful conclusion.”
