Assam: Kokrajhar’s unique pavilion celebrates heritage, tradition, and literary richness amidst Durga Puja celebrations

Amidst celebration of cultural heritage and linguistic pride, the residents of Rabindranagar in Kokrajhar have created a unique "Mother Language Pavilion" in honor of Goddess Durga.

The initiative reflects the deep-seated belief that there is no better medium than one's mother tongue to express thoughts and emotions. Emphasizing the importance of preserving history, tradition, and values through the education of the mother tongue, this pavilion offers a quiet yet powerful tribute to the beauty of native languages.

Drawing inspiration from the recognition of Assamese and Bengali as classical languages, the Rabindranagar Development Committee has skillfully organized the pavilion, making it a centerpiece of the Durga Puja celebrations in the region. Inside, a rich array of Assamese literary works is showcased, including iconic pieces such as Arunodoi, Bismoi, Kuhipat, Mirijiyari, and Akhimot jar heral Seema. In addition, literature from other languages such as Bodo and Bengali is also featured, creating an inclusive celebration of linguistic diversity.

The entrance to the pavilion is a visual delight, adorned with an impressive collection of books, symbolizing the power of knowledge and literature. In a departure from the typical DJ-driven celebrations seen in modern-day worship pavilions, the atmosphere inside the Mother Language Pavilion is distinctly different. Melodious songs fill the air, while announcers continuously remind visitors of the heritage and glory of their mother tongues. Their sweet voices resonate through the pavilion, invoking a sense of pride and cultural connection.

Designed with traditional elements such as wooden pencils and books, the pavilion offers a tranquil and intellectual experience, contrasting sharply with the often-loud and mechanical decorations of other worship sites. By focusing on the essence of language and cultural heritage, the Mother Language Pavilion has become a major attraction, drawing the attention of visitors and providing a meaningful reflection on the role of language in shaping identity and community.

This thoughtful and artistic initiative stands as a beacon of cultural preservation, reminding everyone of the enduring power and inspiration that the mother tongue provides.
