Assam: Locals demand conservation of 500-year-old Banyan tree in Dhubri's Dhorarghat

Locals are increasingly concerned about the neglect of a historic banyan tree, believed to be over 500 years old in Dhubri district's Dhorarghat village in Assam.

Despite Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's efforts to promote environmental awareness through the Amrit Brikshya Andolan, the ancient tree remains improperly conserved.

According to residents, the historic Gohai Kamal Ali's road once ran through the Dhorarghat region, highlighting the area's significant historical importance. The banyan tree, dating back to the Koch dynasty, stands as a testament to this rich heritage. Over time, it has become a focal point for spiritual life, giving rise to four temples: the Kali Temple, Shiva Temple, Hari Mandir, and Namghar.

"This tree is a symbol of confidence for us," say the locals, who regularly pray at the temples under its vast canopy. However, they stress the urgent need for conservation efforts to preserve the tree and promote tourism.

Pronay Roy, Secretary of the Dhorarghat Batertal Temple Committee, emphasised the tree's historical importance. "This banyan tree has witnessed over 500 years of history. We need proper conservation efforts to preserve it and develop this area into a significant tourist attraction," he said.
