Assam: Locals protest to preserve historic Matiya Development Sector office in Goalpara

The Matiya Development Sector Protection Committee has submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the Matiya Revenue Circle, firmly demanding the retention of the Matiya Development Sector Office amidst plans for its dissolution. This plea highlighted the community's commitment to preserving a vital administrative center that has served the region since its establishment in 1954.

The memorandum, signed by committee president Noni Kumar Das and joint secretaries Nipon Pathak and Mahesh Choudhury, highlights recent changes in local governance. Several villages within the Matiya Development Sector have been reassigned from the Dhubri Lok Sabha constituency to the Guwahati Lok Sabha constituency, further complicating the future of the sector. Moreover, the draft Panchayat reorganization has proposed moving six villages to the Kushdhowa Development Sector, intensifying local concerns.

The Matiya Development Sector, one of the largest in Goalpara district, encompasses 11 villages, including Matiya, Dalagoma, and Buduchor. Its strategic location features essential services such as the Matiya Model School, Matiya Model Hospital and various government offices, making it a critical hub for both residents and surrounding areas.

Many residents expressed outrage over the proposed dissolution of an office established post-independence during former Chief Minister Bishnuram Medhi's tenure.
