Assam: Mahout trampled to death by elephant at Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary

A mahout from Darrang district, met a grisly end at the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary after a wild elephant trampled him to death. 

Kumar was trampled by Vikram, one of eleven elephants housed at Mayong Pahar following their rescue from flood-affected areas. According to reports, the elephant became agitated and launched a sudden attack on Kumar, who was in the process of tending to the animal. Forest officials arrived at the scene and have since recovered Kumar’s body for a post-mortem examination.

The previous night, another tragic incident occurred at Deepor Beel on the outskirts of Guwahati, where Kamal Kalita, a 45-year-old laborer, was killed by a wild elephant. The fatal encounter took place in the Miki Para area when Kalita crossed paths with the elephant, which then attacked and trampled him. Kalita was found dead at the scene.
