At a time when rising prices of essential food items have burdened the common people, power minister Prasanta Phukan's recent comments have sparked outrage across Assam.
Speaking at an event organized by the Dhubri district administration to distribute loan-free certificates, minister Phukan claimed that the price of new potatoes in Assam is only Rs 27 per kg, dismissing any significant food price hike as irrelevant.
The minister's statement, perceived as out of touch with ground realities, has drawn sharp criticism from the public already struggling with escalating costs of basic commodities.

Adding to the controversy, minister Phukan made confusing remarks about smart meters, referring to them as "sensitive meters" and advising people to switch off TVs using physical switches instead of remotes, which further baffled attendees and reporters.
Phukan also expressed support for the "one nation, one election" policy, calling it a positive step by the central government. However, his comments overshadowed the developmental agenda he was attending as part of the state’s 12-day program aimed at fostering growth in education, industry, finance, and revenue sectors.
The minister's statements have not only raised eyebrows but also cast doubts over the government's understanding of pressing issues like rising inflation and technological implementation, leading to public frustration at a time of economic hardship.
