Assam: Moran tribe organizations protest demanding justice for youth's killing in Tinsukia district

Following the death of Pranjal Moran, a 26-year-old youth, at least six Moran tribe organizations staged protests blocking national highways in Tinsukia district on April 27. The protesters demanded the arrest of the culprits involved in killing Pranjal and compensation for his family's loss.

One of the protestors demanded the suspension of the Officer-in-Charge of Makum Police Station for their inaction that resulted in the death of Pranjal Moran. He also demanded that the culprits be arrested and produced before a fast-track court, and strict action be taken against them. Another protestor alleged that the father of the deceased arrived at Makum Police Station looking for help before the killing but had to wait for at least two hours.

"We demand justice for Pranjal Moran, an innocent man who was brutally murdered for no reason. The residents of Makum are devastated by this merciless killing and we demand that the culprits be arrested and brought to justice. Pranjal Moran was tortured and murdered in broad daylight, in front of his family members. It is unfortunate that the Makum Police OC did not take action on time, and we question why the police did not reach on time. The murder took place only 500 meters from the police station. If the police had acted in time, Pranjal Moran would still be alive today. We urge the chief minister to take swift action and ensure that the culprits are punished for their heinous crime. They should be hanged for what they have done. If the government fails to take action, the public will take matters into their own hands.", a protestor said.

Another protestor said, "Why did an innocent life like Pranjal Moran have to be lost? Can't the police officials even protect us? We question the district administration's efficiency and the police officials of Makum. How can someone innocent die like this being murdered?"

The police have detained five people involved in the incident on the basis of an FIR filed by Pranjal Moran's family. Three other accused are still absconding. The protests led to the blocking of national highways 37 and 38 and the burning of tires, causing vehicular movement to come to a standstill.
