The mother of the delivery agent who was assaulted by a police personnel in Guwahati's Fancy bazar has reacted to the incident and condemned the police personnel's act.
The incident has drawn widespread condemnation from all quarters including response from Hazarika’s mother, Baby Hazarika, a member of the 12th Police Battalion.
Speaking out on the matter, Baby Hazarika expressed her deep disappointment over the actions of the officer involved. “What the police officer did was wrong,” she stated. “There was no need to resort to such force. If there was an issue, he could have issued a fine instead.” As someone who serves in the police force herself, Baby emphasized the importance of maintaining professional conduct. “We, too, work in the police department, and good behavior should be a priority for all officers.”
Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh took action on Friday and announced the suspension of Inspector Bhargav Borbora, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Panbazar Police Station, after a video surfaced showing a police officer assaulting a delivery agent. A departmental inquiry has also been ordered into the matter.
"The behavior of Inspector Bhargav Borbora is unacceptable. He is being placed under suspension with immediate effect, and CP Guwahati has been advised to post another officer immediately," DGP Singh said.
The incident, which occurred around 6:30 PM near the Jail Road traffic point in Fancy Bazar, was captured on a bystander’s mobile phone.
According to eyewitnesses, the confrontation began when the delivery agent allegedly ran a red signal near Jail Road. A police officer pursued the agent, dragged him to the side of the road, and violently confronted him.
The video shows the officer gripping the delivery agent’s neck and shouting aggressively, "Where do you think you are going?" and "I will kill you." Despite onlookers’ pleas, the officer continued the assault.
One eyewitness, who recorded the incident, claimed the officer threatened them when he noticed the filming. "He demanded that I stop recording and warned others to mind their business," the eyewitness said.
A police official later justified the officer's actions, stating that the delivery agent had ignored instructions to halt and attempted to enter a restricted "No Entry" zone.
