Assam: NEC CIL's dumping grounds endanger Ledo's historical villages

Northeastern Coalfields Coal India Ltd Margherita dumping ground brought extreme threat in Ledo area, evergreen historical villages of Ledo on the verge of extinction.

Many villages, including Jharna basti and China basti in Ledo are now on the verge of extinction due to the dumping ground used by NEC CIL Margherita to dump waste materials near the village areas.

Coal industry was established during the British colonial period where through underground mining method coal was extracted without harming nature.  

But in the post-Independence period, by the end of the 90's NEC CIL Margherita authorities  used open mining methods instead of the underground mining method for coal extraction for which have brought threat to both flaura and fauna of Jharna Basti, China basti Ledo of Margherita sub division under Tinsukia District. 

Apart from destroying the nature NEC CIL Margherita needs a large dumping ground to through their waste materials where many villages in these areas have already been vanished out due open cast mining over the years while the remaining villages such as Malu gaon, Jharna Basti and China Basti of Ledo that remained were taken by NEC coal India ltd Margherita authorities to finally take initiative to increase the dumping ground premises again.

On Thursday members of the Margherita Journalists Association visited the historical Jharna Basti, China basti, and Malu gaon of Ledo and interacted with the local residents about the coming threat which they have to face.
 
Local residents of Jharna Basti, China Basti and Malu gaon of Ledo said that they would die at this place but would not live here place at any cost.
