Assam: Neglected for decades, Margherita-Deomali connectivity road raises concerns among locals

The Margherita Deomali road, a vital link connecting the states of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, has fallen into a state of disrepair, drawing the ire of local residents who have long sought its reconstruction. Stretching 31 kilometers from NH 315 in Margherita, the road has become a perilous route for the thousands of vehicles, students, traders, and workers who depend on it daily.

Despite repeated pleas from the local community and leaders, including Margherita MLA Bhaskar Sharma, Dibrugarh MP and Union Minister Rameswar Teli, and the Tinsukia District Administration, the road's condition remains dire. Pranjal Baraik, the Central Publicity Secretary of the Assam Tea Tribes Student Association (ATTSA), expressed deep concern, stating that the road has been neglected for over a decade.

Baraik highlighted the impact on the community, emphasizing the plight of school and college students forced to skip classes due to waterlogging during the rainy season. He also underscored the critical role the road plays for trade and transportation, connecting two major tea estates, Margherita Tea Estate and Dirok Tea Estate, established in 1884.

"At a time when the BJP-led government is championing development, it is disheartening to see Margherita Deomali Connectivity Road transform into a death trap," remarked Baraik. He pointed out that, despite promises made during election times, neither the Margherita Sub Divisional Administration nor the elected representatives have taken concrete steps to address the deteriorating road conditions.

With the 2024 Lok Sabha elections on the horizon, ATTSA issued a warning to MLA Bhaskar Sharma and MP Rameswar Teli, threatening a mass movement in collaboration with local residents if the road is not reconstructed promptly.
