Kokrajhar police on October 26 apprehended a member of the recently formed National Liberation Front of Bodoland (NLFB) in connection with an extortion case that has been causing anxiety in the region. The arrested cadre, identified as Sujit Marak, also known as Sanjay, aged 38 and a resident of Jaldoba Pt-I, Kokrajhar district, was captured in the Rupshi, Bashbari area near Dhubri district.
Marak had allegedly been involved in collecting money from various businesses and individuals in the Rupshi, Bashbari area, located under Kazigaon Police Station's jurisdiction and adjacent to Dhubri District. According to reliable sources, the NLFB had established a temporary camp in the Rupshi, Bashbari area within Kokrajhar district and had been engaging in extortion activities within the local community.
The security forces, acting on specific intelligence inputs, launched a meticulously planned operation that led to the arrest of Sujit Marak from his hideout. However, a few of his associates managed to escape from the area during the operation, prompting further efforts to apprehend them.
During the arrest, law enforcement authorities recovered three Walkie Talkies, one Hero Glamour Bike without a registration number, and a mobile handset from Marak's possession, suggesting the group's preparedness and intent in carrying out their extortion activities.
Sujit Marak has been taken into police custody for further interrogation, where he is expected to reveal more information about the NLFB's operations, as well as details about the whereabouts of the group's other members.
