Assam: Panic grips Bongaigaon after Russell's Viper sighted multiple times

Residents of Assam's Bongaigaon district are panicked over the past few days following multiple sightings of the highly venomous Russell's Viper snake. These snakes have been found in various parts of the district, including Chitkagaon, Kakaijana, Poparagaon, Dawkijhar and Abhayapuri.

According to local snake rescuers, Harmohan Rabha and Kartik Orau, the presence of the Russell's Viper, which closely resembles the non-venomous python, has been present in the district since 2005. However, it was only during recent recoveries that the true extent of the Russell Viper population in Bongaigaon became evident.

The Russell Viper, typically found in dry areas, poses a significant threat due to its poisonous bite, which can be fatal within a short period if untreated.

Despite the alarming situation, Rabha and Orau urged the people not to panic. They emphasised the importance of seeking immediate medical attention when bitten.

Their advice is resonated by a specialist anesthetist at Bongaigaon Civil Hospital, who also reassured the people about the hospital's adequate facilities for treating snake bites, including anti-venom treatments.

The anesthetist advised residents to be cautious and highlighted the critical nature of Russell Viper bites, which can cause severe pain and lead to kidney failure if not promptly treated.

"It's crucial to minimise the movement of a bitten victim and bring them to the hospital as quickly as possible," he said. He further explained that while the venom affects the blood and can result in kidney failure, timely medical intervention can save lives.
