Assam: Panic grips Goalpara district after two killed during man-elephant conflict in the last 24 hours

Panic gripped Assam’s Goalpara district after two people died in an elephant attack within 24 hours.

Wild elephant attacks have been continuing in Assam’s Goalpara district unprecedented with several incidents of people trampled to death by elephants.  

In the first case, one person identified as Nilima Khatun of Bowalmari village in Goalpara was killed by a wild elephant on April 11.

Just hours after the 21-year-old woman’s death, another man identified as Anwar Hussain, 44 was trampled to death by a wild elephant at Laxmipur last night.

A huge herd of wild elephants caused a ruckus in the house of the deceased’s. The huge herd of wild elephants destroyed the houses and doors of seven families including that of the victim’s.

Vast tracts of agricultural fields have been destroyed rendering lakh of losses for the farmers.

Villagers are constantly living in fear of being attacked by wild elephants. The affected families have accused the government and the forest department taking no step to stop wild elephant menace. 

People have demanded that the victims as well as every family affected by elephant attack be compensated at the earliest.
