Assam: Picnic goer drowns in river at picnic spot in Bijni

In an unfortunate incident, a picnic goer in Assam's Bijni fell into a river and drowned.

The incident happened at the picnic spot at Panbari at Bijni in Chirang district. A group of picnic goers arrived at the Ranighat picnic spot on the occasion of Republic Day. When some of them were taking bath in the Hakowa River, it was then that one of them drowned to his death. The deceased has been identified as 37 year old Hariprasad Sarma.

The body was soon retreived from the river by the rest of the picnic goers. The victim was rushed to the nearby Bhotagaon Civil Hospital, where he declared brought in dead by the doctors. As per sources, the deceased hails from Dangtola in Bongaigaon district.

"He went into the water, We asked him if he knows swimming, and he said in the affirmative. He did some swimming initially, but maybe because the water was deep he found it to be difficult. While he was struggling, one of us jumped into the water to save him. Another of our office staff managed to grab from the side and brought to the riverside. Probably he took in a lot of water during that moment," said a fellow picnic goer as he recounted the incident.
