Assam Police enhance border security amidst fresh violence in Manipur's Jiribam

In the wake of renewed violence in Manipur's Jiribam area, approximately 600 residents have sought refuge in the neighboring Cachar district of Assam. This influx follows a series of violent incidents that have rocked Jiribam, leading to heightened security measures along the border.

The unrest began with the tragic murder of an individual in Jiribam, sparking a wave of retaliatory arson attacks. According to Manipur Police, several homes were torched by unidentified assailants.

Superintendent of Police for Cachar district, Numal Mahatta, reported that security has been significantly bolstered in response to the violence that erupted four days ago. “We have heightened security along the bordering areas following the violence that erupted in Manipur's Jiribam area. We have deployed security personnel and special commando forces, and they are patrolling all the bordering areas. The peace-loving locals are cooperating with us,” Mahatta stated.

The displaced residents from Jiribam are currently taking shelter with relatives in Assam. SP Mahatta assured that the situation in Cachar remains peaceful and is under close surveillance. Additionally, the local Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) has convened a peace committee meeting to address the crisis and ensure stability.

"We will take strong lawful action against those who will try to create disturbance on our side," Mahatta warned, emphasizing the district's commitment to maintaining order amidst the ongoing turmoil in Jiribam.
