Assam: Protests erupt at Alubari line gate in Dibrugarh; ASP and two journalists injured

Intense protests erupted on Tuesday morning at the Alubari Line gate of the Jalan Tea Estate, following a sudden closure ordered by the authorities of the Assam Municipal Corporation (AMC). The unexpected move triggered an outpouring of frustration among local residents, who gathered en masse to oppose the decision and demand immediate access to the estate.

As the situation escalated, tensions flared between the protesters and police forces. Eyewitnesses reported that hundreds of locals clashed with law enforcement, resulting in several detentions amid the chaos. In an effort to regain control, police employed heavy machinery, using a JCB to block the entryway, further restricting access and aggravating the crowd.

In a bid to disperse the swelling crowd, police resorted to deploying tear gas, which only fueled the unrest. Protesters responded by throwing glass bottles, bricks, and stones at the officers, resulting in a fierce confrontation that left both sides on edge. Two journalists covering the event were injured after being struck by projectiles, while Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nirmal Ghosh suffered facial injuries during the fracas.
