Assam: Protests erupt over abduction of youth in Jagun

Protests erupted in Jagun today (March 24) as local residents and members of the Chatra Mukti Sangram Committee (CMSC) blocked National Highway 315, demanding the immediate release of Prakash Bahadur Chetri, who was abducted three months ago.

Prakash Bahadur Chetri was kidnapped on December 18, 2023, by a group of seven armed youths from a mill in Jagun.

The identity and motives of the abductors remain unclear, and authorities have yet to make a breakthrough in the case.

The prolonged silence and lack of significant progress in the investigation have fueled frustrations among the locals, leading to today’s intense demonstration.

Protesters raised slogans and demanded immediate action from law enforcement agencies. The road blockade on NH-315 caused major disruptions, with vehicles stranded for hours.

Leaders of CMSC stated that they will continue their agitation until authorities provide concrete updates on Chetri’s whereabouts.

Local police have assured that efforts are underway to trace the abducted youth. However, protesters argue that the investigation has been sluggish and are calling for intervention from higher authorities.

With tensions escalating, the situation in Jagun remains volatile as residents persist in their demand for justice and accountability from law enforcement agencies.
