Assam: Sand laden boat overturns in Fakirganj, passengers rescued

A sand-laden mechanised boat overturned in Assam’s Fakirganj area on January 26 when the boat was being filled with sand from the adjoining char area. 

The boat was being laden with sand due to the ongoing anti-erosion geo-bag work at the site. 

The boat overturned soon after it was filled with sand. The boatman and other passengers who were engaged in the sand filling task somehow managed to save their lives.

The incident took place in the Brahmaputra river at Dakurvita, Fakirganj in South Salmara district.

“People here are engaged in sand filling due to the ongoing anti-erosion geo bag work. When we reached here, we found that the boat had overturned. As per reports, the quantity of sand was more when being laden onto the boat. Suddenly, there was a crack in the boat when the boatmen and labourers engaged in the work tried to step out and soon after the boat overturned. No injuries or casualties have been reported. A police team arrived and took stock of the situation. The owner of the boat has still not arrived. Only after his arrival will any action initiated”, said a local.

A police team arrived at the spot and began its investigation. Meanwhile, the owner of the boat did not arrive at the time of reporting this news.
