Assam: Siblings arrested in major banned cough syrup trafficking bust on NH-17

In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, police apprehended two siblings and seized 600 bottles of intoxicating cough syrup on National Highway 17 in Dhubri. 

The operation, led by Jitumani Baishya, Officer-in-Charge of Gauripur police station, and Baharul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Balajan police station, took place during a routine checkpoint in the Balajan area.

Acting on a tip-off, the police team intercepted a Bolero pickup van traveling from West Bengal to Gauripur late Friday night. The vehicle, bearing registration number AS-17C-7304, was found to be carrying the large cache of banned cough syrup.

The arrested individuals were identified as Monirul Haque and Zainuddin Sheikh, sons of Momir Uddin from Khilapara village in Bongaigaon district. The successful seizure highlights the ongoing efforts of local law enforcement to curb the trafficking of illicit substances in the region.

In another incident, in a joint operation by Golakganj police and the 48 Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) culminated in the arrest of Iliyasur Rahman, a notorious figure in the region’s drug mafia.

Acting on a tip-off, authorities conducted a raid in the Nandnipar area, under the jurisdiction of the Golakganj police station.
