Assam: Sidli Assembly bye-election begins with huge voter turnout

The Sidli Assembly by-election witnessed a robust start today as voting commenced at 7:00 am on November 13.  Long queues formed early at polling stations, signaling strong public participation across the constituency. 

Congress candidate Sanjiv Wary was among the early voters, casting his ballot at the Runikhata Higher Secondary School polling station in Chirang. Accompanied by his wife, Wary spoke to the press after voting, expressing confidence in a positive outcome. "I am hopeful and confident that the people of Sidli will place their trust in me. The enthusiasm at polling centers is a strong indicator of public support. I am certain of a favorable result," he stated.

Meanwhile, Madhab Chandra Cherry, General Secretary and Political Adviser to the BTR Chief of the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL), also cast his vote at the Gurubhasa Higher Secondary School polling station alongside his family. Cherry voiced assurance regarding the success of the UPPL’s candidate, Nirmal Brahma, backed by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Highlighting the impact of the BTR peace accord, Cherry noted, "The public is happy, and they have come out to vote in large numbers. The peace accord has brought stability to the region, and people are optimistic about the future."

Polling stations throughout the constituency reported steady voter turnout, reflecting a keen interest among residents to partake in this significant democratic exercise. Election officials confirmed that all measures had been implemented to ensure a smooth and transparent process.

The Sidli constituency's by-election includes 273 polling stations, with 33 marked as critical due to their sensitivity. The voter base comprises 2,17,183 registered electors, including 1,07,894 male voters, 1,09,283 female voters, and four third-gender voters. The election is being managed by a team of 1,224 polling officers dedicated to overseeing proceedings.
