Assam State Zoo welcomes exciting new residents

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said today that the Assam State Zoo has welcomed several remarkable new animals, aimed at enhancing the visitor experience. Among the new residents are a pair of leucistic black bucks, a pair of exotic blue and gold macaws, a female one-horned rhinoceros, and a tigress.

Sarma expressed his enthusiasm and said “These additions will enrich the zoo by enhancing its residents and offering more variety to visitors.” The inclusion of these diverse species is part of an ongoing effort to promote wildlife conservation and education.

Leucistic black bucks are a fascinating variation of the commonly found blackbuck antelope, distinguished by a unique genetic condition known as leucism. Unlike albinism, which results in a complete lack of pigmentation, leucism allows for reduced pigmentation, resulting in animals that often exhibit white or pale fur with some colored markings.

The blue and gold macaw (Ara ararauna) is a striking and popular species known for its vibrant plumage and playful personality. Native to the rainforests of Central and South America, particularly in countries like Brazil, Colombia, and Peru, these large parrots are easily recognized by their bright blue wings and back, golden-yellow underparts, and distinctive green forehead.

The female one-horned rhinoceros, also known as the Indian rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis), is a magnificent and iconic species native to the Indian subcontinent. Known for its distinct single horn and armor-like skin, this rhino symbolizes conservation efforts in the region.

The tigress, a female tiger (Panthera tigris), is a powerful and elegant apex predator known for her striking beauty and vital role in maintaining ecological balance in her habitat. Tigers are the largest wild cats, and tigresses are particularly notable for their maternal instincts and solitary nature.
