Assam: Suspended ASP Subhalakshmi Dutta appears in court in torture case, denied bail

Former Additional Superintendent of Police (SP) Subhalakshmi Dutta, who was suspended from service following allegations of torturing a forest tribal woman, appeared before a Nazira court on September 12. The court, however, denied bail and ordered Dutta to be placed in custody at Sivasagar district jail.

Dutta, who previously held the position of Additional SP (Border) in Charaideo district and was the then police officer of Nazira sub-division, had been arrested in connection with the brutal assault on Anima Praja, an Adivasi woman who had taken refuge in the forest.

Following three days of police custody at Sivasagar District Sadar Police Station, a case was registered at Nazira Model Police Station under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Dutta was produced as an accused under Sections 324 (voluntarily causing hurt), 342 (wrongful confinement), 307 (attempt to murder), 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt), and 226 (using a dangerous weapon) of the IPC.
