A tragic incident unfolded at the Tingalibam Tea Garden in Sonari, where a wild elephant fatally attacked a tea worker, 38-year-old Madhu Bhakt. The father of two had ventured into a nearby jungle to collect firewood on the afternoon of November 28 and did not return home, prompting concern among his family and fellow workers.
The following morning, Madhu's lifeless body was discovered by his colleagues, who noted injuries consistent with an elephant attack. Local residents confirmed the presence of tusk marks on the body, corroborating the cause of death.
Authorities from the Forest Department and police have been informed and are conducting investigations into the incident. Human-elephant conflicts remain a pressing issue in the region, with wildlife encroaching on human habitats due to deforestation and shrinking natural habitats.
This marks yet another instance of such deadly encounters, underscoring the urgent need for measures to mitigate the conflict and ensure the safety of both humans and wildlife in the area
