Assam: Teacher continue to draw salary despite school remaining shut since two years

In an utterly bizarre incident, a teacher in Assam’s Silchar has been drawing his monthly salary, despite the school remaining shut for the past two years.

As per reports, the teacher has been drawing his salary after closing the Lower Primary School in Dhalai at Hatikhal Riyang Basti two years ago. Surprisingly, the people in the area including little kids who used to study in the school are unable to remember the teacher. The same is the case with the chairman of the school management who has no idea about who is teaching in the school, yet the school is providing mead day meal every month.

According to local sources, a teacher named Hasina Begum of Silchar city was transferred to the school two years ago. After joining the school, she appointed a local proxy teacher named Birbal Riyang. The school was opened for a while but the school eventually shut down after Birbal got married. Unfortunately for the people of the hill area and for the future of the children leaving there, this incident has drawn condemnation from all quarters.

It is to be noted that the Central and State Governments are trying to organize the education system through a modern process by implementing new rules and regulations.  There are different levels in terms of monitoring the reading performance of government schools. But this incident in Silchar has raised serious question on the school management committee of neglecting their duties.
