Assam: Tension prevails after pregnant Golden Langur dies after being hit by four-wheeler

Tension prevailed after a rare Golden Langur was killed after being hit by a vehicle on National Highway 17 near Kakaijana Reserve Forest in Bongaigaon district on December 25. The dead langur was pregnant at the time of her death. 

Locals suspect that the accident took place when the Langur was trying to move out from the forest in search of food and cross the national highway. 

In the past too, Golden Langurs had died in several road accidents on the said stretch. Police and forest officials were present at the spot. 

Widespread anger spread among the locals over the death of the rare monkey in an accident at a time when the Golden Langur festival is going to take place in Bongaigaon.

Angry people demanded that Abhayapuri forest officer take necessary measures to protect the Golden Langur. Locals paid homage to the dead Golden Langur with a minute of silent prayer at the spot.
