Assam: Tensions escalate at Jorhat Medical College over decision to hike medical services post-Durga puja

A tense standoff took place at Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH) as student organizations and unions gathered to protest against the institution's recent decision to increase prices for certain healthcare services following the Durga Puja celebrations.

The unrest stems from a notable absence of the college principal, who has not been present to address the concerns of the agitated students. As several student groups convened at the medical college, they expressed their dissatisfaction regarding the fee hikes, which they believe will impose an unfair burden on patients and their families.

In a press conference held on Friday, JMCH authorities announced plans to implement significant increases in the rates for six specific healthcare services. The fee for surgeries is set to soar from Rs 600 to Rs 6,000, while daily bed charges will rise from Rs 10 to Rs 50. Registration fees will double from Rs 10 to Rs 20, and the cost for private paying cabins will jump from Rs 1,800 to Rs 3,000. Additionally, general surgeries will see a price increase from Rs 600 to Rs 3,000, and laparoscopic surgeries will rise from Rs 3,000 to Rs 5,000.

Despite these increases, the authorities confirmed that fees for 530 other medical services will remain unchanged. Following Durga Puja, outpatient department (OPD) services will also see new operating hours, now running from 5 PM to 7 PM, with all medical examinations conducted on-site at the hospital.
