Assam: Tezpur’s historic Mukherjee Bari gears up for 161st Durga Puja celebrations

People of Tezpur preparing for the much-anticipated Shardiya Durga Utsav, with just moments to go before the celebration begins. This year marks a remarkable 161 years of the Mukherjee Bari Durga Puja, a tradition steeped in history and devotion.

The Mukherjee Bari, known for its rich cultural heritage, is all set to welcome the idol of Goddess Durga. In a nod to tradition, the idol will be brought in a palanquin, just as it has been done for generations. Pankaj Saikia reports that this year, the idol will not be transported by vehicle; instead, devotees will carry it on their shoulders, adhering to the time-honored customs that have defined the festival for decades.

As the clock strikes 6 PM today, during the auspicious moment of Shashthi, the air will fill with devotion and reverence as the idol is installed at the altar.
