Assam: Three prisoners serving life sentence released from Tezpur Central Jail on the occasion of Kati Bihu

In a significant development coinciding with Kati Bihu, three inmates serving life sentences for murder were released from Tezpur Central Jail. The release, based on a directive from the Assam government, marked a new chapter for the individuals who had spent decades behind bars.

The prisoners, identified as 86-year-old Nabin Talukdar from Thakurbari, Rangapara, 50-year-old Baban Bhumij from Chatia, and 50-year-old Biren Das from Bihali Banhbari, were granted freedom after prolonged incarcerations. Talukdar had been imprisoned since 2009, while Bhumij and Das had both been in custody since 2001.

The move comes as part of a broader initiative by the state to review and grant relief in cases where prisoners have served substantial portions of their sentences, taking into consideration factors such as age, behavior, and health conditions.

For the released men, stepping out into the open air on this auspicious day marked the beginning of a hopeful future, as they return to their communities after nearly two decades or more of confinement.
