Assam: Tirap Autonomous District Council demands government's intervention to stop illegal mining at Patkai hills

The Tirap Autonomous District Council in Assam has called for the government's intervention to halt illegal mining activities at the Patkai hills. 

The council has raised concerns over the environmental damage and potential harm to local communities caused by unregulated mining. 

They urge the authorities to take immediate action to protect the region's natural resources and ensure the welfare of its inhabitants.

With this, the Tirap Autonomous District Council Demand Committee, along with other organisations such as Singpho Student Union, All Assam Tangsa Student Union, All Assam Sema Student Union and All Maan Tai Speaking Student Union on Tuesday took out a peace motorcycle rally from Jagun to Margherita sub-divisional administration (civil) for their various burning problems.

More than 100 motorcycle and 4-wheeler vehicles participated in the motorcycle rally and shouted various slogans against the BJP-led Government of the state and Union.

Pallab Shyam Wailung general secretary of Tirap Autonomous District Council Demand Committee said that it is very unfortunate that after giving assurance in the year 2019 by Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Home Minister Amit Shah Tirap Autonomous Council has not been declared which we the Tribal people living at Tirap tribal belt under 83 no. Margherita Constituency of Tinsukia district are very much disappointed. 

Pallab Shyam Wailung said that due to the unscientific way of extracting coal illegally from historical Patkai hills, a threat has come to the life and property of tribal people living in the Tirap tribal belt area and demanded the BJP-led Government both at Union and State to stop illegal coal mining at Historical Patkai hills and to implement forest dwellers Act 2006 and issue land pattas to tribal people living at Tirap Tribal belt at the earliest otherwise we shall intensify strong agitational programme in the coming days. 

Further starting February 26, the organisations have threatened an economic blockade at the Margherita sub-division. A memorandum was given to the Sub-divisional officer Margherita's sub-divisional administration(civil).
