Assam Police on April 10 apprehended two persons for allegedly cheating in the name of state Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in Hailakandi.
The matter came to light after a youth from Palarpar village in Hailakandi district received a call from an unknown number stating that he had been selected for the Chief Minister's Special Student Scholarship.
The alleged fraudsters identified as Shahid Uddin and Kailas Ravidas informed the youth that the scholarship worth Rs 47,000 will be paid in three installments.
Later, both Shahid and Ravidas went to the youth's house on April 10 morning and demanded Rs 3,000 in the name of providing the scholarship examination following which the youth's father became suspicious.
Upon quizzing the duo, the two fraudsters tried to run away, however, the neighbors caught the fraudsters and informed the police who arrested them.
"They called me and told me I had been selected for a scholarship of Rs 16,500. They asked me if I wanted to receive the scholarship and I replied yes. I was asked to submit a passport-size photo of mine, a copy of my aadhaar card, and details of the bank account of my father. I don't know how they got my mobile number. I have a Facebook account but I never gave my number to anyone,'' the youth said while speaking to the media.
