Assam: Two in Majuli sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a minor girl

The district and sessions court in Majuli on July 31 sentenced two persons to life imprisonment for raping a 13-year-old minor girl.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 each on both the accused identified as Manas Bharali and Ratul Bharali.  

Following the conviction, the families of the accused created a ruckus at the court premises.

The gruesome incident, which took place in January at Jorbeel Sonapur in Majuli, had created a sensation across the area. 

''The accused were Ratul Bharali, and Manas Bharali who have sentenced to life imprisonment. Besides this, the court has slapped them with a fine of Rs 20,000. Both of them had raped a minor girl in the Jorbeel area,'' said a public prosecutor while speaking to the media.

The public prosecutor further said that a total of five persons were sentenced to life imprisonment and several cases were settled today.

The victim girl while speaking to the media also narrated her story that she was raped in the morning when she was on her way to bring her goat.

''At 6 AM I was going to bring my goat when all they (accused) caught me and raped me. They destroyed my life and my self-respect,'' the victim added.
