The pro-talk faction of the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) formally announced its dissolution on January 23 at a camp in Mangaldoi. The decision among both leadership and members, comes in adherence to an agreement inked on December 29 in Delhi, involving the central government, the Assam government, and ULFA.
Prominent leaders such as Arabinda Rajkhowa, Anup Chetia, Raju Baruah, Pranati Phukan, Sashadhar Choudhury, Pradeep Gogoi, Pranjit Saikia, and others were present during this historic moment. The dissolution paves the way for a new chapter as the organization gives way to a non-political entity.
Expressing his sentiments, ULFA leader Mrinal Saikia lamented the consequences of delayed decisions, stating that the expected outcomes were not realized due to a lack of timely decisions.
The dissolution also marked the official closure of the United Liberation Front of Assam, as announced by President Arabinda Rajkhowa. However, it is noteworthy that ULFA, under the leadership of Paresh Baruah, continues to operate independently, with members remaining steadfast.
Anup Chetia, reflecting on the process of breaking the organization, expressed hope for dialogue with the government. He stated that the youth, though not restrained, are still drawn to ULFA, underlining the need for effective decision-making.
In an effort to maintain unity and momentum, Anup Chetia introduced a new non-political organization. He will serve as the chief convener of this newly formed entity, as the leaders and members strive to contribute positively to the region's development.
