Assam: Village Council Development chairman of Basugaon town face ire of locals on charges of illicit affair

The Village Council Development Committee chairman, Sanjit Debnath, found himself at the center of a storm due to allegations of engaging in an illicit affair. The incident unfolded in Tilak village, nestled near Basugaon town within the Chirang district on May 12.

Sanjit Debnath, a father of two, was reportedly found under suspicious circumstances at the VCDC office in Tilak village. Rumors had been circulating for some time regarding his involvement in an extramarital affair with a married woman from Vijay village, identified by the surname Burman.

The tension escalated when locals purportedly caught sight of the two individuals together at the VCDC office during the late hours of the night. Prompted by their suspicions, the community members intervened, intercepting the duo and promptly alerting the nearby police station.

Upon receiving the distress call, law enforcement swiftly intervened, accompanying Sanjit Debnath to safety, amidst what can only be described as a palpable atmosphere of community unrest. The incident has since rippled through Basugaon town, eliciting strong emotions and sparking public outcry.
