Assam: Villagers forced to use pond and stream water as Jal Jeevan Mission fails in Bokakhat

Residents of Shilbheta village, located in Ward No. 9 under Mohmaiki Gram Panchayat, have been struggling for clean drinking water for years due to the failure of a water supply project under the Jal Jeevan Yojana (JJM). The villagers are left with no option but to rely on ponds, canals, and streams for all their water needs, including drinking, cooking, and household chores.

The project, aimed at providing piped drinking water, has been non-functional since its launch. Villagers allege that poor-quality construction and substandard technical equipment have rendered the scheme ineffective. Despite repeated complaints, the divisional authorities lack the resources to repair and operationalize the system.

The locals also accuse the contractor of engaging in subpar work with the alleged connivance of officials, motivated by commissions. This negligence has forced the 200-odd families in Shilbheta to revert to using water from natural sources, raising serious concerns about waterborne diseases and sanitation.

The villagers are now appealing to the government and the concerned department to take immediate action to revive the water supply scheme and ensure access to safe drinking water.

This plea highlights the urgent need for accountability and efficient implementation of welfare schemes to improve the quality of life in rural areas.
