Assam: Villagers repair breached embankment to save crops from floodwaters in Nagaon

In a desperate bid to save their crops, villagers from Assam's Kasuwa region in Nagaon are working tirelessly to repair a breached embankment of the Barpani river.

The fragile embankment constructed using traditional 'pak beel' (bamboo baskets) filled with fish, has been their only defense against the floodwaters.

This year's pre-monsoon floods came early, taking a harsh toll on the embankments. The breach in Pamila Jarni, part of the Madhavpara gram panchayat, threatens the agricultural dreams of over twenty villages downstream, including Alibasti, Pramilaati, Kathni, Garangaati, and Shimaluguri.

With no proper canals or alternative irrigation systems in place, several thousand hectares of ready-to-harvest sali rice crops stand at risk. Hundreds of villagers have joined forces in this manual construction effort, hoping to complete the repairs within the next two days.
