Why were Dhubri flood victims upset with Congress MP Rakibul Hussain

A new video of Congress MP Rakibul Hussain has surfaced online, showing flood victims in Dhubri appearing to be upset with the MP. In the video, Hussain is seen waving at the locals while sailing through the river Brahmaputra.

Several people reacted to the video with the notion that the victims expressed their anger as Hussain did not meet them personally, opting instead to wave from a distance.

Responding to the video, Hussain, who won from Dhubri with a record margin of 10 lakh votes in the recent Lok Sabha elections, stated, "That's their way of showing love and affection towards me."

He said, "I was late to visit them due to work. When they wanted me, I wasn't present. So, it's natural for the locals, who are like my family, to be upset. That's their way of showing affection towards the person they chose."

"This shows they want me," he added.

While some might portray the situation negatively, Hussain viewed it in a positive manner. He said he had visited 46 locations and would compile a report to present to the government to improve the conditions of the flood-affected areas in Dhubri.

"We have stressed immediate issues like healthcare to the state," the Congress MP added.

About the seven lakh people affected by the floods in Dhubri, Hussain said it was "not the correct time" to discuss the situation as his "experience was not more than 15 days" since taking the oath. He requested more time to address the situation on the "right platform".

Speaking about visiting relief camps in 11 constituencies in Dhubri, which are separated by floodwaters, Hussain said, "I am trying my level best because it is a huge area and visiting each place amid severe floods is a tough job."

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Rakibul Hussain emerged victorious with 10,12,476 votes defeating AIUDF chief and perfume baron Badruddin Ajmal.

The Dhubri Lok Sabha seat has seen a massive voter turnout in the general election held on May 7, wherein 24,50,041 of 26,60,827 electors went to the polling stations to cast their votes. A voter turnout of 92.08 per cent was recorded in all of 11 assembly constituencies that make up the Dhubri seat.
