Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has revealed a thorough strategy to tackle child marriage in the state. He assured that a strict campaign will occur every six months. Sarma also expressed his trust in law enforcement and suggested there would be notable arrests in the September month campaign.
"Every six months, our campaign against child marriage will take place. In September, the campaign will be taking place. Police doing their job, you will get to see a big arrest during September..." said Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Earlier, on September 2, CM Sarma revealed that the Assam state government had received a substantial response from the public regarding the proposed law to ban polygamy. A total of 149 suggestions were submitted in response to a public notice seeking feedback, with an overwhelming 146 suggestions in favor of the bill, reflecting strong public support. However, three organizations expressed their opposition to the bill.
Taking to his Twitter handle, CM Sarma wrote, "We will now proceed to the next stage of the process, which is to complete the final drafting of the bill in the next 45 days."
The Assam government had previously sought suggestions and opinions from all stakeholders on the proposed law to ban polygamy in the state. To assess the legislative competence of the Assembly in enacting such a law, the government constituted an Expert Committee.
The Expert Committee, led by Justice (Retd.) Smt. Rumi Kumari Phukan as Chairperson, included esteemed members such as Shri Devajit Saikia, Advocate General of Assam, Shri Nalin Kohli, Senior Additional Advocate General of Assam, and Shri Nekibur Zaman, Senior Advocate of Gauhati High Court.
