Assam witnesses a dip in production of 'Tri-colour' in state. Here's why

This year’s preparation for I-day celebrations have taken a unique trajectory. As the nation gears up to commemorate its sovereignty and freedom, production of tri-colour in Assam is witnessing an unexpected decline. This comes as a surprise for many since the state had witnessed a surge last year following a spirited and successful campaign to instill patriotic fervour.

Speaking to India Today NE, Rakhi Choudhury, employee of Assam Khadi and Industries Board said, “Last year, the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign was launched which led to a significant increase in orders. However, this year, there hasn't been a similar campaign, resulting in a decline in orders. Despite this, we have always set and met our targets, like manufacturing 10,000 flags. We even worked on a Sunday to fulfil orders received until yesterday.”

She further explained, “Usually, we create flags of sizes 6/4, 3/4, and 2/3, apart from the standard size of 1/1.5. We also make big flags of sizes like 9/12 and 9/6, which are specially ordered. This year, we've sold about 6 of these special big flags. We've been fortunate not to face any challenges in terms of materials like colours and fabrics. Last year, due to the campaign, we had to rush to make many 1/1.5 size flags in a short time, but this year, having pre-made flags allowed us to manage production better. Unlike previous years when we would start in August, this year we began manufacturing flags in May”.

Fast forward to 2023, and the scenario has undergone a significant shift. In shedding light on the dynamics of flag manufacturing for Independence Day celebrations, our conversation with the manufacturers brings to the forefront the intriguing interplay between past commemorations and the present.

Bhanu Kalita, a shopkeeper said, “Last year's sales were exceptional due to the celebration of the 75th Independence Day, which made everything feel particularly special. This year, while sales remain steady, they do not match the heightened demand. The success of the "Har Ghar Tiranga" (Flag in Every Home) campaign played a role in boosting sales last year.

She also said, “Our focus is on producing environmentally-friendly flags, opting for materials like cotton, khadi, and even silk”.

Moreover, on 13 August PM Narendra Modi also posted a tweet encouraging everyone to participate in the #HarGharTiranga movement. In his post he wote,“In the spirit of the #HarGharTiranga movement, let us change the DP of our social media accounts and extend support to this unique effort which will deepen the bond between our beloved country and us.”

As this year’s Independence Day unfolds, it becomes clear that while the backdrop shifts, the essence of unity and pride remains vivid.
