Assam: Woman and her one-year-old daughter drown after car plunges into Barak river

A heart-wrenching road accident late Tuesday, December 17 night in Assam’s Cachar district resulted in the deaths of a woman and her young daughter after their vehicle plunged into the Barak River.

The victims, identified as Helena Begum Borbhuyan and her daughter Jannatara Begum, were traveling with Helena’s husband, Rais Uddin. According to reports, the family had gone to Silchar for a medical consultation and was returning home to Barakhala Mohanpur when the tragic incident occurred.

As they were heading back, the Alto vehicle suddenly lost control and veered off the road, crashing into the river. Rais Uddin, despite the chaos, managed to break the car’s window and escape. However, his wife and daughter were swept away by the current and drowned.

Upon receiving reports of the accident, local police, along with State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams, swiftly arrived at the scene. A large-scale search operation was launched, with SDRF personnel and locals combing the river throughout the night.

By Wednesday morning, the bodies of Helena and Jannatara were recovered from the Barak River. Rais Uddin, who sustained injuries, was immediately taken to Silchar Medical College Hospital for treatment.
