Assam: Woman dies due to alleged medical negligence, women’s group demand justice for deceased patient

A case of alleged medical negligence at a private healthcare facility, Polyclinic and Birthing Center, in Boko has drawn sharp condemnation from local organizations. The Assam Nationalist Youth Student Council (ANYSC) and its sister organization, the National Women’s Wing, have submitted a memorandum to the Kamrup Rural District Commissioner demanding urgent action.

The incident occurred on December 12, 2024, when Himani Kalita, a young woman admitted for a common ailment of diarrhea, died shortly after being administered an injection at the hospital. The organizations allege that negligence by medical staff caused the untimely death of a patient whose condition was otherwise treatable.

Expressing outrage, the groups called for a high-level inquiry into the matter and severe punishment for the doctor responsible. "Such irresponsibility resulting in the loss of life is deeply distressing," they stated in their memorandum.

Additionally, the organizations have demanded Rs 30 lakh in compensation from the hospital authorities for the victim's family. They warned that failure to address their demands would lead to intense democratic protests, including the closure of the hospital's main gates.
